Mending fractures

Dear Readers,

We’re at the end of an eventful year that started with the Arab Spring — the various revolutions in many Arab countries. Change is in the air, triggering events from one country to another like pebbles rippling in a lake. And from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street, it’s been primarily young people at the core.

Why is change needed? Reasons vary, yet beneath it all remain unfulfilled needs of human rights and freedom, individual happiness and common identity, healthcare, economic stability and environmental protection. And the list goes on.

Of course, so much depends on governments. In describing the common good, the Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of those in authority as people “who are capable of providing the generations to come with reasons for life and optimism.”

But much depends on individuals and groups as well. Participation is an essential element to bring about change in society, helped by an awareness that ultimately we all belong to the same human family under God.

In this issue we feature stories of individuals, families and groups who were and are able to make a difference, bridging gaps, mending fractures and serving others thanks to their spiritual motivation. For some this was the Focolare spirituality of unity, for others the life of Scripture (particularly the Gospel message of love), for still others a determination to contribute to the common good.

May you find your own inspiration in these pages!

With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year from the entire Living City staff,
