“We Have Always Been People of Faith”
By Susanne Janssen
As we celebrate Black History Month, the imam of Harlem’s historic Malcolm Shabazz Mosque explains projects underway that promote community and dialogue.
A community of primarily African-American Muslims in New York, the Malcolm Shabazz Mosque in Harlem has been led by Imam Izak-el Pasha since 1993. It is a historic place where Malcolm X once wrote and spoke and, although its main goal is to strengthen Islamic life in the city, there is an awareness that only dialogue between religions can guarantee a future of peace.

By living CityA response to Ron Austin’s book, In a New Light
By Cecilia González-Andrieu
When I was in graduate school, Ron Austin was the patient and generous mentor who listened to doubts and gently answered questions; there was a uniqueness about him that my friends and I recognized—and it filled us with hope. And hope does not come easily or cheaply when you are in grad school. Among ourselves we always referred to Ron with two interrelated phrases: “Ron is the real thing” and “Ron is a sage, a wise man.”

New Life at the Medical Center
By living CityI work as a clinical social worker in a medical center. Among the staff there is a great sense of collaboration, collegiality and a sincere desire to work as a team. In spite of that, there is not always agreement about how to deal with particular problems.
