From the Editors Desk

Dear Reader,

“The star of Bethlehem,” Edith Stein wrote, “is a star in the darkness of night even today.”

You may question our choice of this issue’s cover photo. With the holiday season and especially Christmas upon us, this is a time we would like to see images of kindness, joy and well-being. Yet with natural disasters and their countless victims; with the constant attacks in Iraq and the Middle East; with economic struggles in many families; and with corruption, scandal and other problems—the need to work for change grows ever stronger. Indeed in the reality of our world’s current events Christmas is more than ever an invitation to renewed hope.

Many people have had the vision and courage to act on this hope and work to make a difference. This month’s Living City features informative stories on the United Nations, youth initiatives and other heroes, more or less known, who have given or are giving their lives for great ideals.

May these pages help us to return to Christmas’ true spirit and especially to express our gratitude to God who continues to inspire hearts to do something about our world through love, generosity and example.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone,
