From the Editors Desk

Dear readers,

As you’d expect from Living City, many articles in this issue speak about “life.” You’ll come across “an experience of life,” “a view of life,” “a path for the harmonious living of the human family,” and “we chose to live for unity.” There’s also “the results of love lived out among individuals and also among entire peoples.”

This reminds me of the culture of life and of unity we’re working toward wherever we are. Countless efforts are continually made throughout the world in this direction, and it is encouraging to read and to know about them. Considered by themselves, some might seem isolated or even insignificant, but looking at the whole picture even small experiences acquire new value.

“Many people have been working along these lines for years,” Chiara Lubich told media professionals in 2000. “Their experiences might still be limited, but they are not, because bearing witness to one’s ideals always sows a seed destined to yield a new culture.”

On June 25, one event sowing a new culture of life will take place in Hyde Park, New York: the Luminosa Award for Unity. Washington’s Cardinal Theodore McCarrick will be honored in recognition of his work for dialogue with people from all faith traditions. The award ceremony will be followed by an interfaith panel on “God as Love,” sponsored by the Focolare’s Center for Education in Dialogue.

We’ll cover the event in a future issue, but I wanted to let you know what we’re actively “living” for this month—something anyone can be a part of, even at a distance.
