One Family
I attended a Tribute to Chiara Lubich last week at the John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC. Sitting beside me was a Muslim man and a follower of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. Then he passed over the Nov 14 issue of his mosque's newspaper and the words across the top exclaimed "We Are United!" over a picture of Chiara and Imam W.D. Mohammed.
The man then told me that God created Adam, and Adam was not black or white or Chirstian or Muslim - he was human. And that one human, multiplied, is still that same one; we are all still human. So he said and repeated, "We are all one family, one family."
Soon afterward, a dear friend of the focolare, muslim Sister Bahija came to the podium. She told us,"If you closed your eyes and listened to my voice, you would not see the color of my skin, or see the religious attire I'm wearing. You could only feel what is in my heart and I hope it would be love."
I later thanked her for the feeling of family she brings with her wherever she goes. She told me that a soup with just the water is very bland, but when all the vegetables come together with the water, then we have something delicious and wholesome for everything. We each add something unique.
Muslims and Christians meet in Brooklyn
This is a comment I received today via email.
Dear Focolare Interreligious Dialogue friends,
We had a wonderful spiritually rewarding meeting with our WD Mohammed American Muslim Friends yesterday at Tom and Mary Hartman's house in Brooklyn. Those who attended the Focolare Muslim meeting in Rome last month gave inspiring witness to the event. Plus we had the opportunity to meet new friends.
