Believers united for the good of humanity

By Sarah Mundell

“Peace be upon you.” with this greeting fifteen years ago this month, associates of Imam W. D. Mohammed and Chiara Lubich gathered from far and wide. The Malcolm Shabazz Mosque in Harlem and the streets outside of it were filled with bright colors, faces of many shades, warm greetings in English and Arabic and an excited expectation for what was a first for everyone.

That historic day in Harlem

Q&A with Eli Folonari 15 years after Chiara Lubich addressed a very special audience at the Malcolm Shabazz Mosque in New York

By Clare Zanzucchi

During her life Chiara Lubich was actively in dialogue with many religious leaders. What was unique about her relationship with Imam W. D. Mohammed?

Chiara had realized that in order to reach the goal of her life — to contribute to fulfilling Jesus’ prayer, “May they all be one” (Jn 17:21) — what needed to be emphasized in loving our neighbor was to focus on what already unites people.

A meeting of global impact

Imam Izak-El Pasha of Harlem’s Malcolm Shabazz Mosque reflects on the significance of Chiara’s visit 15 years ago

Some-thing new started in Harlem 15 years ago when Chiara Lubich and Imam W. D. Mohammed joined their communities at the historic Malcolm Shabazz Mosque. What was the significance of the meeting?

It is a fact that the meeting that took place at the Historical Malcolm Shabazz Mosque in 1997 between these two global leaders (Imam W. D. Mohammed and Chiara Lubich) was a meeting of global impact. Why? Because of the global impact of these two honorable and noble leaders of the word of God.

Our Journey Towards the Excellence of the Human Family

On May 18, 1997, history was made at the Historic Malcolm Shabazz Mosque in Harlem, NY.

On that day, two blessed leaders, Imam W. D. Mohammed (religious and spiritual leader of the largest constituency of Muslims in America), and Chiara Lubich (president and spiritual leader of the Focolare Movement worldwide), held a joint meeting at the Mosque to formalize a “pact” illustrating their commitment to work together to promote unity. This collaboration was not only between their own communities, but also with people of faith from all religions, based on common principles and values.
